Uxmal Ruins

UXMAL AND KABAH

Uxmal is the largest and finest of the classic Puuc sites and it is known for its carved facades, grand terraces and plazas.  We will visit the pyramid of the Magician, the Palace of the Governor and other important buildings.  Kabah’s Codz Pop Palace features a stucco facade with 260 masks of Chaac, the rain god.  A monumental arch marks the entrance to this ceremonial center. Lunch is included. 9:00 am to 2:30 pm.

Uxmal is the largest and finest of the classic Puuc sites and it is known for its carved facades, grand terraces and plazas.  We will visit the pyramid of the Magician, the Palace of the governor and other important buildings.  In the evening, learn of the customs and legends of the ancient Maya through the magic of Light and Sound (English or Spanish Version).  Lunch is included. 1:00 pm to 10:30 pm.

OLD HACIENDAS AND VILLAGES

San Antonio Tehuitz is an old hemp-processing hacienda with machinery still in operation today.  Continue to Tepich, an eighteenth-century hacienda and Acanceh, a picturesque Mayan village featuring a rebuilt gothic church.  Continue to Cheletun, where you will board an old horse-drawn tram to visit a cenote (clear-water sinkhole) with access stairs.  Time for a refreshing swim. 8 am to 2 pm.

EDZNA-CAMPECHE

Edzna a Puuc-style mayan city of the classic period, reached the height of its glory between 900 and 1200 A.D., not only in architecture but in engineering as well.  The most important structure is the Great Pyramid.  Other important structures are the Ball Court, the Temple of the Old woman, the Temple of the Stelae and the Temple of the Giant Masks.  Colonial Campeche’s wall and forts still speak of bygone buccaneer raids.  Lunch is included.  8am to 6 pm.

OXKINTOK AND UXMAL

Oxkintok, an ancient Mayan site that flourished between 300 and 600 A.D., is located some 30 miles southwest of Merida and is currently in the process of discovery, research and restoration.  The most important findings so far are a mausoleum of a Mayan dignitary and what appears to be an observatory.  Uxmal is the largest and finest of classic Puuc sites and it is known for its carved facades, grand terraces and plazas.  We will visit the pyramid of the Magician, the Palace if the governor and other important buildings.  Lunch is included.  9am to 5pm.

OXKINTOK, HACIENDAS AND CELESTUN BEACH

On the way to Oxkintok, an ancient mayan site in process of restoration, visit Kanachen, an old hacienda with hemp-processing machinery still in operation.  Proceed to Granada, Santo Domingo, Kochol and Chunchumil, old hemp-processing haciendas no longer in operation.  Continue to Celestun beach, the main feeding ground of the pink flamingo.  An exciting boat ride along the estuary will offer the sight of hundreds of flamingos and variety of birds in a lush tropical setting.  Time to enjoy the beautiful Celestun beach.  Lunch is included.  9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

 

FLAMINGO JUNGLE TOUR

Celestun is the main feeding ground of the pink flamingo. An exciting boat ride along the estuary will offer the sight of hundreds of flamingos and variety of birds in a lush tropical setting. Time to enjoy the beautiful Celestun beach. Lunch is included. 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

CHICHEN ITZA

This is the largest and most important archeological site.  While the central area features a pure mayan architectural style, a combination of Maya-Toltec styles can be appreciated in the northern area.  Visit the Pyramid of Kukulkan, famous for marking the equinoxes early in the afternoon (via the play of light on the pyramid’s northern face, that suggests a serpent undulating down the staircase), the Temple of the Warriors, the Ball Court (largest in Mesoamerica, perfect acoustics), the Sacred Well and the Observatory. 9:00 am to 6:00 pm

CHICHEN ITZA-CANCUN (DROP OFF)
